“Splash” Christmas Decorating…

DSC03473

Over the years I have gone from having very little in the way of Christmas decorations to having an over abundance of Christmas decorations.  For years I felt somehow obligated to display every single decoration I had in my possession…at times our house looked like there was a Christmas explosion.  I would like to think that I was doing it for my husband and my son, but really as much as they enjoy Christmas, fewer decorations would not have dampened their Christmas spirit.

I have to say that last year I cut back a little… I didn’t put ALL of the decorations out  but there was still an overwhelming amount spread throughout the house.  So much so that a couple of months ago I realized that there were still a few pieces hanging out in plain view…well not in the main living area, but in rooms that I do go into from time to time. Namely the game room! Oops…sorry honey!

This year, I am embracing a new style of decorating. I am not quite ready to embrace a minimalist approach. However, I am embracing the idea of Splash decorating…I don’t think that’s a real style of decorating but it’s the best description I can come up with for this post.

I do love decorating for Christmas…I enjoy the sparkle and shine that the decorations bring into the house during a time of year when the local flora and fauna are made up of browns and greys. Also, we host our annual family Christmas gathering and gift exchange. This event in itself requires a festive atmosphere…

My idea for this year is to splash a little bit of Christmas in every room in the house…A simple grapevine twisted into the word Noel and accented with tiny points of light set on the buffet. A beautiful floral arrangement placed on the dining room table surrounded by a cluster of trees made from a variety of natural materials.

The guest room is getting a simple pillow update…the cutest silver fox pillows from Home Goods.

The kitchen gets a little splash of color with a collection of red and white Christmas tins that draw your eye up to the top of the kitchen cabinets.

The dessert buffet table is laid out with the Christmas dishes given to me by my Mom some 20 years ago when our son was little.  I have lined the window with a collection of bottle brush trees that tie in with the Christmas trees on the dishes…

DSC03515What is your Christmas decorating style?  Do you pull out all the stops and go all Griswold on Christmas? Or are you more reserved when it comes to decorating for the Christmas Holiday?

I will admit that I am not quite done with putting out the decorations. However, the rest of the decor will be focused on our outdoor entertaining area…

As I scanned through my friends posts on Facebook I came across the most adorable interpretation of a Christmas Tree...From what I can tell from where I came in on the story is that Sue at Reblinged was asking her Facebook friends to help name her creation…I read a few of the comments and there were several clever suggestions…However, I agree with Sue and have to say that there was absolutely no other choice…So let me introduce you to Audtree Hepburn! Isn’t she a knockout!

Christmas Cone Trees…

I have a thing for trees…all shapes and sizes.  I especially like the cone shaped trees you see during the Christmas season.  Here are a few that a friend and I made today.  They are part of our Christmas Tree themed decor at church.

TreesAll you need to make these festive trees are a few cone shaped tree forms.  You can use Styrofoam, Paper Mache or Grapevine forms. You can even make your own if you are feeling especially crafty.  Next you will need fabric pins and floral wire.  Finally, you will need some fabric or burlap ribbon, and lots of bling on a string.

Cone TreesThe point of making any craft is to let your personality shine through.  Remember to have fun!

Merry Christmas,

Today was a huge day…

471 - Copy

Today was a huge day in my 9-5 world.  I am a volunteer organizer…today I received 77 new volunteer interest forms.  This is a really big deal!

Volunteers are the life blood of our organization.  It would be virtually impossible to accomplish the goal to meet and greet every person who walks onto our campus without volunteers.

Our church offers 5 services on the weekends.  It takes approximately 150 volunteers to cover all of the needs of my ministry teams alone.  Adding 77 volunteers to the team rosters seems like a lot of volunteers.  That is until you break it down by service and team…the volunteers serve every other weekend, so that is 150 volunteers every weekend.  After all the dust settles it equals out to approximately one new volunteer per team.

The original contact has been made…now the real work begins.  I have to find a way to help these new volunteers stay excited about the commitment they have made.

What I did today will help someone make a difference in the life of someone else…Today was a huge day in my 9-5 world.

Pinterest Pick of the Week!

Pinterest Pick of the Week is a such a beautiful and original idea!  As soon as I saw this pin on Pinterest I fell in love…

The Fishbowl Snowman!

Pinterest is a bit of a mystery…I think it’s like 6 degrees of separation…Six degrees of separation is the idea that everyone is approximately six or fewer steps away, by way of introduction, from any other person in the world, so that a chain of “a friend of a friend” statements can be made, on average, to connect any two people in six steps.

On Pinterest I followed someone who had  followed someone who had  followed someone who pinned a pin from Sassy Trash Antiques…it then  showed up on my wall and I pinned it! And the rest is Pinterest history.

Then I followed the link to the original blog Sassytrash Antiques and Designs and read about Martha the creator of the fishbowl snowman.  I then jumped over to check out Sassytrash’s Pinterest page and found a kindred spirit.

They say that copying someone is a form of flattery…Well, I will be flattering Martha when I make my very own fishbowl snowman!  I hope if Sassytrash visits my blog she will leave me more info on Martha and how I can follow her on Pinterest...

This Holiday Season, You’ve Got a Minute to Win It…

christmas-minute-to-win-it-party-supplies-2This Holiday Season you will probably attend or host a holiday party…If you are the hostess I hope you will make your party the mostess by incorporating some fun and easy Minute to Win it games into your party planning…

How many parties have you attended over the years that after a little small talk and a few appetizers the party begins to languish and you are left looking for an opportunity for an early exit?  Don’t be that party…

There are so many cute and easy ways to entertain your guests.  My inspiration comes from the popular game show…Minute To Win It!  Ask  a couple of friends to be the game host/hostess.  Explain the rules of the games and the time schedule ahead of time. This will free you up to mingle with your guests, snap photos and check on the buffet table.

Wrap up a few gifts for the winners, place them in a basket and let the game winners choose their gift.  Include gift cards, homemade sweets, movie passes…

Here are few games we are considering playing at our Christmas Parties this year…

How many marshmallows can you toss through the Christmas wreath into a bucket…In a minute?  Grab up a bucket from the local home store or even a small trash can will do.  Lay the bucket on its side, attach a wreath to the opening and place the bucket on the edge of a table or bar.  Mark a spot on the floor where the contestant will stand. Place a dozen marshmallows in a bowl, set the timer for one minute…Ready. Set, Toss!

Can you stack plastic cups with one hand…In a minute?  Place a stack of Solo cups on a table.  Using one hand, the contestant has one minute to stack the cups in a pyramid shape in one minute…Ready, Set, Stack!

How many ornaments can you and a your partner hang on a string without using your hands…In a minute?  Hang a string between two columns or a door way, place 12 ornaments with ornament hooks on a table.  The two contestants have one minute to move the ornaments from the table to the string without using their hands…I would recommend using plastic ornaments for this game or you will be sweeping up glass for days…The team who hangs the most ornaments on the string in one minute is the winner…On your mark, Get Set, Go!

Can you get the cookie from your forehead into your mouth without using your hands…In a minute?  This is one of those games that will have the crowd roaring with laughter…You have one minute to move a cookie from your forehead into your mouth by using only your facial muscles…get your camera ready…I promise there will be priceless photo ops with this one.  Get set. move that cookie, move that cookie…

Can you open a present while wearing ski gloves before doubles are rolled…In a minute?  Wrap a gift, the smaller the present the harder it will be to open while wearing bulky ski gloves…. You can wrap an empty box or wrap a gag gift or even a gift worth keeping…you can make this the grand prize game.  The champion of the minute to win it gameathon is the team who opens the gift the fastest under one minute.

There are a number of ways you can play the games; you can play as individuals which would take all evening if you had more than a handful of guests.  I think teams are the way to go…I think guys vs girls or family vs family.  I would however, recommend to never ever have couples compete against one another…this may lead to a heated discussion or two…speaking from experience…best to keep it friendly and having more members on a team gives you a variety of talents to choose from.

Check out this web site for a few additional ideas for your Christmas Minute to Win It party.

Here’s hoping your holiday party is filled with laughter and great memories!
