Time to Winterize…

DSC00413

It’s January and most of the country is settling in for a long winter.  Have you thought about winterizing your home?  No I don’t mean wrapping the pipes and putting away the lawn furniture.  Although those are very good ideas I am not talking about the outside of your home.

Wouldn’t it be nice to come in from the cold and walk into a home filled with warmth.  Warmth that doesn’t come form the thermostat but from little touches that you have added to your home.DSC00408

In the winter we dress in layers. Layers help us stay warm.  Try dressing your home in layers.  Blankets, throws, quilts and lots of throw pillows will add a whole new layer of comfort to your home. I have throws on the back of the kitchen chairs, quilts stacked up next to the fire-place.   I have blankets on every bed and on the sofa.  I have even left a quilt out on the patio for those days when the thermometer is near freezing but the sun is shining…and I want to sit outside for a bit.  Having blankets handy for you and your family to snuggle up in will actually save you money…you will be less tempted to turn up the heat when a blanket is within reach.

You can add a layer of warmth to your home by adding a little whimsy to your decorating style.  Adding a pop of color to your bookcases is as simple as using scrapbook paper, a vintage album cover or coffee table book as the background on your shelf.  Restyle  your bookcases by moving things around and mixing it up.  Add dimension and texture by adding  pictures, mirrors, $store silver trays and collectibles in with the books. Remember your bookshelves should show off your personality…you don’t live in a library. Do you?

Speaking of books, I love a good book.  I have books in every room of our home.  Yes, even the bathroom. TMI?   There is no better time of year to catch up on your reading than when the temperature outside is hovering around freezing.  I suggest taking a trip to your local used book seller.  Pick up a latte on the way and spend the next several hours scouring the shelves for a few good reads.  When you get home stack your new to you books next to your favorite chair.  Make sure they are within easy reach…so you can enjoy them whenever you have a few minutes to leaf through or read a page or two.  I especially love “picture books” or “coffee table” books for leafing through when I only have time for tea…

Spring is a long way off for most of us, but the retailers are already pushing the new spring and summer colors, patterns and fabrics.  The clearance racks will be full of quilts, chenille blankets and faux fur throws.  Look for down filled pillows covered in soft fabrics.  Don’t be afraid to go with a bright color a whimsical print.  You might even pickup a cozy pair of slippers and a new coffee mug from the clearance racks…keep your eyes open, you never know what you might find.  Have you been to HomeGoods Store?  It’s my new favorite home decor store…

One of the easiest ways to warm up your home is to add fragrance.  Find a candle fragrance that smells like your favorite dessert is baking in the oven.  I love Circle E candles.  They are multi wick, burn evenly and smell delicious.  My favorite for this time of year is “Fresh Cake”.  If you are uncomfortable with having lit candles in your home, you can pick up a candle warmer.  It will slowly melt the candle releasing the wonderful aroma without a flame.

There you have it…a warm cozy welcoming space to greet you when you come in from the cold… and all we did was winterize our home.  Now snuggle up with a blanket and a cup of hot tea and a something sweet.

Today was a huge day…

471 - Copy

Today was a huge day in my 9-5 world.  I am a volunteer organizer…today I received 77 new volunteer interest forms.  This is a really big deal!

Volunteers are the life blood of our organization.  It would be virtually impossible to accomplish the goal to meet and greet every person who walks onto our campus without volunteers.

Our church offers 5 services on the weekends.  It takes approximately 150 volunteers to cover all of the needs of my ministry teams alone.  Adding 77 volunteers to the team rosters seems like a lot of volunteers.  That is until you break it down by service and team…the volunteers serve every other weekend, so that is 150 volunteers every weekend.  After all the dust settles it equals out to approximately one new volunteer per team.

The original contact has been made…now the real work begins.  I have to find a way to help these new volunteers stay excited about the commitment they have made.

What I did today will help someone make a difference in the life of someone else…Today was a huge day in my 9-5 world.

Pinterest Pick of the Week!

Pinterest Pick of the Week is a such a beautiful and original idea!  As soon as I saw this pin on Pinterest I fell in love…

The Fishbowl Snowman!

Pinterest is a bit of a mystery…I think it’s like 6 degrees of separation…Six degrees of separation is the idea that everyone is approximately six or fewer steps away, by way of introduction, from any other person in the world, so that a chain of “a friend of a friend” statements can be made, on average, to connect any two people in six steps.

On Pinterest I followed someone who had  followed someone who had  followed someone who pinned a pin from Sassy Trash Antiques…it then  showed up on my wall and I pinned it! And the rest is Pinterest history.

Then I followed the link to the original blog Sassytrash Antiques and Designs and read about Martha the creator of the fishbowl snowman.  I then jumped over to check out Sassytrash’s Pinterest page and found a kindred spirit.

They say that copying someone is a form of flattery…Well, I will be flattering Martha when I make my very own fishbowl snowman!  I hope if Sassytrash visits my blog she will leave me more info on Martha and how I can follow her on Pinterest...

Looking forward….

To decorating for the holidays! Where did you think I was going with that…not on your life.

I would like to share a few ideas that I am planning on scattering around the house this holiday season…first something to snack on…

Image

Click here for the yummy recipe…

My husband picked up a couple of old bird-cages on the side of the road.  I plan to paint them black and I hope they turn half as nice as these, minus the black ravens of course.

Our guests will most likely be greeted by this guy…

Here is the inspiration for my mantle…except I don’t have a mantle but I do have a hearth so use your imagination…

I am also planning to wrap a few gifts…I really like this combination of textures and materials…

Then there is always time for Christmas Kiss and Photo…

Every Once In A While…

Every once in a while you stumble across a great idea…..and ever since Pinterest showed up those great ideas are easier to stumble across and share.

While surfing Pinterest I stumbled upon a Pin from the blog Cowboys and Cadillacsinspirational framed shopping bags…which is a post about other bloggers who have embraced the idea of framing unique or treasured shopping bags. Maybe the shopping bag is from a special vacation or came baring a special gift. Maybe the bag came from Tiffany’s, Chanel, Gucci or Prada!

I particularly like this idea because I love the nice bags that you get when you shop at certain stores.  I typically hold onto the bags and use them for different things.  The larger bags will be used for carrying clothes to the dry cleaners.  I will use the smaller bags to carry my lunch.  But I always use them with some reluctancy…I really would rather keep them.  And now I can…as soon as collect a few fav’s!

Furniture Friday…Certified Organic!

I purchased two chairs on the last day of an Estate Sale…The minute I saw them I knew what I would do with them.

Then I hit a snag…finding the time to do a seemingly simple project.

My biggest dilemma  was whether or not to paint the chairs…painting a chair is not as easy as it sounds…there are nooks, crannies, spindles and carved legs to deal with…and truth be told my attention span is more suited to painting a box.

This morning I made the decision to move forward with the project…no paint, just recover the seat cushions.

Here it is an hour later and the project is finished and I am drafting my blog and ready to link up to Miss Mustard Seeds Furniture Friday Blog…

I am really happy that I did not paint the chairs…they look great with the original finish and the certified organic burlap coffee bag seat cover.  New dilemma…keep them or take them to shop?

Valentines Day Subway Art from designs by cp.blogspot.com

I love all of the word signs that are floating around in th etsy shops and on Pinterest!  They are fun and thought-provoking.  I have been inspired to make my own.  Now to decide… which one will it be?

Red Velvet Week-Red Velvet Crepes from Taste and Tell Blog

Red Velvet cake is my favorite cake…I love it in it’s purest form, made from scratch, 3 layers with cream cheese icing and a sprinkle of pecans.  I will take it in little bite size pieces called cake balls.  I will indulge in a cupcake and yes I will even take it as a crepe.  My fondest memory of the lovely red velvet cake is that our wedding cake was red velvet with cream cheese icing.  Delicious!

I think this looks like a raspberry cookie sandwich.   It reminds me of a moonpie…don’t ask me how this pretty pink concoction could remind me of a chocolate moonpie.  Because I don’t have an answer..it just does!  I have loved raspberries ever since the anesthesiologist hand fed them to me after my son was born.  As I lay exhausted from the long delivery and I was on the verge of giving up…He told me if I could/would push a little more he would retrieve the raspberries from his lunch for me.  I did!  He did!  Our son was born @ 4:20am!  Then I ate raspberries!

DIY Projects from Crocheted Sea Grass & Flowers by Amber Lay

I really like finding new ways to use ordinary everyday things.  A candelabra for a jewelry holder, individual yogurt containers for garden seedlings and tin cans for flower vases.

Individual heart-shaped chocolate cupcakes drizzled with yumminess…worth the effort and the calories.  I think I will make these and share a little love with my bible study group and my co-workers.

Individual chocolate puddings, one to keep and one to share.  Or if your significant other doesn’t care for chocolate pudding, then you have one to keep and one to keep for later!

Dr. Oz’s Tart Cherry Smoothie (Sleep While You Slim)

Cherries are one of my favorite fruits.  Come to think of it most of my favorite fruits are dark in color.  I enjoy cherries, red grapes, blueberries and blood oranges.  I really like the idea that I can have a cherry smoothie in the evening and  it keeps your metabolism working while you sleep.

from skinnytaste.com

This scrumptious delicacy incorporates all of my favorite desserts into one.  I will make individual red velvet heart-shaped cupcakes drizzled with an intense dark chocolate syrup  topped with raspberries and a little chocolate bow and I will make it skinny!

Happy Valentines Day!  I hope Pinterest will inspire you in some way…

Repurposed Pumpkins…Snowmen Welcome You to our Home this Christmas!!!

How cute are these little guys…Pumpkin Snowmen Welcome You to our Home this Christmas!!!

Back in early October I ventured into Houston to the open air produce market to purchase my heirloom pumpkins as well as my seemingly ordinary pumpkins.  I really love mixing the different types and shapes of pumpkins to create an interesting look for Fall.  They really welcome the season the changing season without having to go all out.  However, I like the pumpkins so much I always have a difficult time disposing of them when its time to put the Christmas decorations up.  This year I stumbled on a crafty blogger who had a stellar idea on extending the life of her pumpkins.

Coco Chanel once stated that “Imitation is the highest form of flattery” so I hope Stephanie over at Under the Table and Dreaming will be flattered should she happen to see that I borrowed her wonderful idea.

Chalk Paint Project…a beginners attempt

Chalk paint is the hottest thing going in furniture refinishing.  The paint is terribly expensive but easy to use.  This is my first chalk paint project.  The chair was a freebie, picked from an old barn.

Chalk Paint Project...Duck Egg BlueI originally thought about painting it primer red but thought, what if it turns out great…blue works better with my home decor.  I might want to use it as my desk chair for a little while.

I don’t think the picture does it justice or it really looks like this…actually it looks pretty good sitting in the extra bedroom surrounded by other items I picked up while out junkin’.  There is a gal over at the antique mall that offers classes on painting furniture with chalk paint.  I think I should sign up…
