2014 52 Week Photo Challenge…4/52: Color

Finding color in the dead of winter can be a challenge…you have to be intentional when looking for color in and amongst the greys and browns that make up the winter landscape.  Winter in South Texas is usually fairly mild and we have a good amount of green to balance out the browns…that is until the polar vortex came barreling into town…only time will tell how much of the landscaping won’t recover.

This past week I attended a funeral.  As I sat with my friends and co-workers at the back of the church I was treated to a wonderful display of color as the sun hit the stained glass windows…I couldn’t help but gaze up at the windows as I listened to the Priest speak of heaven and angels…and a life ever lasting.  I can only imagine that these colors, as brilliant as they were that morning, will pale in comparison to heaven itself…

Just for the record, I waited until the service was over and everyone had left the sanctuary before I quickly snapped these shots…

Mellow Yellow…

As I have mentioned before…most of the flowers in my garden were gifted to me by my Dad.  I have about a dozen assorted daylilys, 6 Amaryllis and a confederate rose I consider Heritage Plants .  These photos were taken today, April 27, 2012.  For today’s post I have only shared the daylilys that are shades of yellow.

The shade of yellow determines the meaning. Pure, bright and sunny yellow is the easiest color to see. People who are blind to other colors can usually see yellow. Yellow is full of creative and intellectual energy. Always use yellow note pads.

Yellow symbolizes wisdom. Yellow means joy and happiness. People of high intellect favor yellow. Yellow daffodils are a symbol of unrequited love. Sunday’s color is yellow-gold.

Yellow Energy

Like the energy of a bright sunny day, yellow brings clarity and awareness. The shade of yellow determines its effect: Yellow-green can mean deceit, and creates a disoriented feeling. Orange-yellow imparts a sense of establishment. Clean light yellow clears the mind, making it active and alert.

Put some yellow in your life when you want:

  • clarity for decision-making
  • relief from ‘burnout’, panic, nervousness, exhaustion
  • sharper memory and concentration skills
  • protection from lethargy and depression during dull weather

Trendy Tuesday: Mood Enhancer…Tangerine Tango

Trendy Tuesday...Tangerine Tango

I have been thinking about an article I recently read about the new spring color trends.   Pantone the worlds renowned authority on color has announced the color trends for Spring 2012.  Tangerine Tango is being called the color of the year, a spirited reddish-orange, that provides the energy boost we need to recharge and move forward in the coming year.

Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute  was quoted as saying “Consumers look to spring for renewed energy, optimism and the promise of a brighter day.”

Nanette Lapore says, “We love the mix of hot neon colors with soft pastels, reminiscent of nature at its extremes: a powerful sunset, the ocean sparkling at dusk with flashes of lightning in the distance.”

Tangerine Tango makes me think of a fiery daylily that grows in my garden.  It also brings to mind the citrus smell of oranges as well as the creamy coolness of orange sherbet.

The latest issue of Better Homes and Garden Magazine has Tangerine Tango splashed across the pages…all you need is a little splash of this color to brighten up a room and your mood.

I have enjoyed this color for a couple of years. I have a Jones of New York jacket, purchased on the clearance rack at a local discount store. I have an oversized Michael Kors Bag that I purchased on sale three Christmas’ ago. I also have a throw pillow on the living room chair that is just to the softer side of this vibrant color.

I didn’t realize I was such a trend setter when I purchased my little splashes of Tangerine Tango…all those years ago.

Here’s hoping your day is filled with splashes of color that give you the energy boost you need to recharge your battery and help you move forward with optimism in the coming year!

y is for yellow…social and enthusiastic (a-z challenge)

I know your mind has probably taken you to a very sunny happy place.  A place filled with yellow daffodils, fuzzy ducks, lemon cake with lemon frosting, yellow tulips or a yellow school bus.  Quite possibly you are thinking about the yellow pages, a yellow daisy or little yellow rubber ducks.  Maybe your mind has you thinking about yellow labs, bananas, taxi cabs or even yellow highlighters.

These are exactly the things I used to think about when I heard someone mention “yellow”.  However, all of that changed a couple of years ago.  I no longer think in these terms thanks to a personality profile assessment test that we were asked to participate in where I work.

I will admit that I was a bit hesitant and anxious to take the test.  I was happy knowing what I knew about my psyche.   I was just as happy not knowing certain things about myself that could burst my perfect little bubble.  Of course there was also the concern that something less than complimentary would be revealed which would give pause to my employer about my ability to get my job done.

Obviously I had some issues that I was unwilling to see from someone elses perspective.  Especially a very cold impersonal computer test which could not possibly understand everything that makes me tick. The test took all of 5 minutes to complete. It turns out that the computer test pegged me and everyone else who answered the questions truthfully dead on.  What an eye-opening experience for me.

My personality test revealed that I am YELLOW…no not yellow as in jaundice or cowardly.  According to the Insights Discovery Personality Profile Yellow is social, dynamic, demonstrative, enthusiastic and persuasive.  A person with a “yellow” personality was likened to a Golden Retriever.  A person who is fun to be around but will chase any butterfly or frisbee that comes into view.

Some of things the test revealed were not a surprise to me.  I am happy to serve and help others.  I am friendly and sociable.  I have a strong sense of community and I am trusting and tolerant of others’ actions.

The test also revealed that my particular color yellow is very different from that of my co-worker who is also yellow.  On the color wheel there are many variations of the color yellow, some have more green and some have more orange in the mix.  My personality cocktail, so to speak, is unique to me and how God designed me to be.

The other colors on the wheel are green, blue and red.  The person with a “green” personality is focused on values and the depth of the relationship.  The person with a “blue” personality is typically introverted and has a desire to know and understand the world around him.  The person with a “red” personality is extroverted and has high energy.

My personality is definitely a mixture of all of the colors on the wheel.  When working with budgets and computer spreadsheets my naturally creative side must make room for the analytical side to get the job done.  And somedays require me to be more caring and attentive so I have to dig deeper for the ‘green” in me.  Then there are days when the “I’m in charge” “fiery red” side of me comes out of left field and has to make a statement or two.

All in all this is who I am, one very bright, mixed up yellow golden retriever chasing frisbees. I wouldn’t want to be any other color than the color YELLOW!
