“Playing” Interior Decorator…

Today I wrapped a word a day photo challenge  and my desire to freshen up our bookshelves into a neat little package.  Today’s word challenge was “playing“.  When I first saw today’s challenge I immediately thought about children on a playground or kids playing baseball or football.

I don’t usually encounter kids in my day so that idea went out the window almost immediately.  Then I thought about our little dogs and trying to catch them playing but mostly they sleep.  So, how was I suppose to capture the concept of playing?  So here you go…I “played interior decorator today.

I sat down with a hot cup of coffee and I googled decorating tips for bookshelves, read a couple of blogs and viewed numerous images.  I found a few ideas that I liked and the next thing you know…Everything was removed from the shelves and spread across the dining room table.  I whipped out the furniture polish and gave the wood a quick wipe.  The dust jackets on my coffee table books were tossed and the books were used as backdrops for the center shelves.  The larger items were placed on the tallest of the shelves and the layering began.

After…

Then I took a step back and looked at the pictures and remembered the words of one of my favorite designers, Coco Chanel.  I read that she said that after you are finished getting dressed, take a look in the mirror and then take off at least one accessory.  So I decided that I would take that advice and apply it to my bookshelves…

Shelves Finished

My goal was to create a visual story…I hope I accomplished my goal.

January Photo a Day 2013: Something beginning with T

Day 8. Something beginning with ‘T’: Take a photo of something today starting with the letter ‘T’

There are so many things that begin with the letter “T”…tangerines, treats, temptation, trucks, tractors, tops, tulips. The hardest part was deciding which “T” would I post...Here is my interpretation of “T”…Too many tea cups? Never.

Teacups, Teaspoons, Tea Pots and Tea diffusers..

January 2013 Photo a Day…The View from Here!

Day 4. The view from here: With many people around the world on holidays, it’s a great way to see where people are. Take a picture of your view from where ever you are.

Today’s view is from my back porch…Every morning while drinking my morning cup of coffee I stand at the back door and look out across the yard.  I am ever hopeful of being greeted by a majestic buck.  So far I have only seen small herds of does and their fawns.

DSC00263

Today, as I stood looking out the door I noticed there was something very different about our yard.  Nocturnal groundskeepers showed up and cultivated the ground around all of our oak trees.  Wasn’t that nice of them!

DSC00252

As I stepped out onto the porch to survey the work that had been done it became apparent that the over zealous groundskeepers had cultivated almost the entire yard…

DSC00261

During their haste to complete the job before the sun came up they left their footprints in the yard…I think they should come back and smooth out the rough edges.

DSC00260

They did more work than I was expecting…but they were willing to work for grubs and acorns.  If you are looking for nocturnal groundskeepers with affordable pricing I will be more than happy to send them your way….all you have to do is ask.  Really!

DSC00265

Our groundskeepers are better known as feral hogs…the hog population in Texas has reached the millions.  These shockingly destructive wild hogs wreak havoc across the southern United States.  It is estimated that these animals do some $400 million in damages annually.  They have no natural predators. Sows begin breeding at 6-8 months of age and have two litters of four to eight piglets every 12-15 months.  Do the math…these hogs are a huge problem!

16. Two things: Look for things in pairs today. Is it a lovely old couple that you see from behind? Or the salt and pepper shakers sitting on the bench? Find two things and take a photo.
17. Ready: Is it a photo of your dinner being ready? Or you ready to catch the bus? Or something else. It’s a toughy – but it will get your mind thinking!
18. Shadow: Find a shadow and shoot it. It could be your own, or a shadow of something else. Shadows look great with a black and white filter over the top {just sayin!}.
19. Delicious: What’s delicious to you? Is it the chubby cheeks of your toddler, the hunk at the gym or a cake you plan on eating for afternoon tea?
20. Something you saw: Go about your day with eyes wide open and take a photo of something you saw.
21. What you do: Do you go to school? Train elephants at the circus? Write at home? Play mum to your kids? Act as CEO to a big business? Paint in your spare time? Dance when no one is looking? Take a photo of what you do {something that makes you ‘you’} and share it.
22. Corner: It could be a sharp corner of a building, a corner of an artwork, a corner of your home or something else. Corners are everywhere. Shoot one.
23. Electric: This could be a simple photo of your toaster {but get creative} or something else electric.
24. Stripes: Look for stripes in your everyday. They could be in the zebra crossing on the road, or in your outfit or somewhere else.
25. Landscape: Step back and take a photo of a landscape near you. Or even take a little trip just for the photo. Would be nice to explore your town for a beautiful photo.
26. Together: There are many definitions for together. One is: In or into a single group, mass, or place. Take a photo of together, whichever definition you’d like to use.
27. Sun: Whether the sun is out in full force, or hiding behind the clouds today – take a photo of it. Or you could get creative and take a photo of sunlight or some other interpretation.
28. Through: Take a photo of looking through something – through the window, through the gate, through the trees… whatever you please.
29. Grow: People do it, plants do it too… get creative and take a photo of something that grows.

January Photo a Day 2013…Today!

1. Today: It’s the first day of the new year, so take a photo of how you spent the day.

DSC00087

Today!  The first day of the new year is an overcast drizzly day here in Southeast Texas…It’s the kind of day that isn’t calling me to venture outside.  It’s just the kind of day that’s good for thinking about all of the years possibilities…

I am spending today with my BFF, my husband.  We started today off by sleeping in, something we rarely have an opportunity to do.  We enjoyed a cup of coffee and some homemade pumpkin bread.  We talked about our upcoming ski trip and the major project that will begin in our backyard in the coming weeks.  We ate breakfast while watching the Pasadena Tournament of Roses, Rose Parade.  Now we are curled up on the couch where we will probably spend the rest of day…watching one College Bowl game after another, 6 games, 11 hours of continuous football…At some point I will close my eyes and catch the proverbial 40 winks…

The “January Photo a Day 2013” prompt was to post a photo of how I spent the first day of the new year….after giving it some thought, not too much, I decided that all that I have done and will do today is my choice…and I am thankful for that freedom…

I started Today, the new year, being thankful that I live in country that allows me many freedoms; religious freedoms, freedom of speech and the pursuit of happiness. I realize that these freedoms are not unique to the United States, but there are more people that do not have these freedoms than those who do…I pray that each person who visits this blog who enjoys these freedoms will make a difference in the life of one person who does not enjoy these freedoms.  (Hmmmm, an idea for a future blog post)

Jeremiah 29:11 “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

This is the first day of the month long “January Photo a Day 2013” challenge.  The challenge is being hosted by FatMumSlim.  You can follow along by visiting her blog or Facebook page.  Please leave a link to your “January Photo a Day 2013” photo in the comment section and I will share it with all who stop by a visit…  Have Fun!

What are the prompts and what do they mean?

3. Heart: Take a photo of a heart, or a heart shape.
4. The view from here: With many people around the world on holidays, it’s a great way to see where people are. Take a picture of your view from where ever you are.
5. Movement: Get moving and take a photo. You could take a photo of cars whizzing by, somebody jumping or you could even take a run and take photos as you’re jogging along.
6. Mine: Take a photo of something that’s yours. Perhaps it’s a thing, something you’re proud of or a person you call ‘yours’.
