February Photo a Day Challenge: Fork

So many forks so little time…that’s my motto!  I absolutely love eating out!  Finding a great restaurant where the locals hang out that offers a creative menu using local ingredients off the beaten path is my kind of place.

DSC00768

In the movie Pretty Woman Vivian receives a lesson on fork etiquette from Barney the hotel manager,  shrimp, salad, dinner fork…something about how many tines there are…Here is my take on the fork, the smaller the plate, the smaller the fork...Now that makes sense to me!

DSC00767

Have you ever come to a fork in the road?  Many times in life staying on the path we are on is no longer an option.   Life presents us with a choice…which way to go, what to choose, left or right?   If you have been to a theme park you may have noticed that people naturally take the path to the right, therefore creating a traffic jam of people…Sometimes the road less traveled is by far the better route.  Next time you visit a fair, theme park or flea market take the path to the left.  All forks in the road lead somewhere…consider all options and choose carefully!

DSC00765

Someone who speaks with a forked tongue deliberately says one thing and means another. They are considered hypocritical and are not worthy of trust.  What’s the old saying…”Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me.”  Wouldn’t it be nice if  a person who spoke with a forked tongue actually had a forked tongue? Maybe not… Now that I really think about all of the people who do “speak with a forked tongue” life would take on the look and feel of a horror movie.  On second thought no forked tongues…

DSC00763

A Tree filled with forks is a good thing.  A forked trunk and forked branches make for a beautiful canopy that provides a shaded area where you can relax, entertain or even get married.

There you have it my take on the February Photo a Day Challenge 2012: Fork!

You can check out FatMumSlim for all of the details for the photo challenge.  If you are not up to posting a photo a day feel free to use these as prompts for postings of your own.  If you should choose to use one of these prompts include a tag for February Photo a Day 2013 so we can check out your postings.

Cheers!

2. Pattern: Look around and see where you can find pattern in your day. Is it in something you’re wearing? In a rug you come across in your travels? On some wallpaper, a book or something else?
3. Something beginning with ‘E’: Take a photo of something beginning with the letter E.
4. Hope: Oh, a hard one. How would you photograph hope? Is it something you wish for? Someone who gives you hope? A quote that brings hope to your life?
5. Something you smelled: What’s something you came across today that smelled {or smelt depending on where you live}. Take a photo of it.
6. Soft: Take a photo of something deliciously soft.
7. Your name: This is a fun way to get to know each other. Perhaps you could take a photo of a name badge you use for work {or even an old one}, your name on an award you received, or perhaps you can scribble down your name on paper and show us that way?

The sunrise this morning was beautiful and the air was crisp and cool…just the way January should be…As I was standing in the driveway admiring the beautiful weather, listening to the birds singing their songs and watching them chasing one another through the trees I noticed something…It was ME!  The perfect photo opportunity to finish up the January Photo a Day 2013 Challenge.

January Photo a Day 2013: Down!

Day 30. Down: Is it looking down or something that makes you feel down? Interpret it however you like.

Usually looking down from heights makes my heart race and palms sweat…this view was through the glass and the feeling was still the same.

January Photo a Day 2013: Delicious

Still catching up…

Day 19. Delicious: What’s delicious to you? Is it the chubby cheeks of your toddler, the hunk at the gym or a cake you plan on eating for afternoon tea?

This ain’t your mama’s afternoon tea…This, my friends, is the dish that my husband requests that my parents make whenever we visit.  This is Deer Sauce Picante!  It is a wonderfully rich and delicious stew served over rice.

On our visit this January my Dad passed the baton to the next generation of family cooks.  We did all of the chopping, measuring, stirring and watching the pot come to a boil.  One would think the main ingredient in this dish is the deer meat.  It is a key ingredient but it is not what makes this dish.  The KEY ingredient in this dish is the black cast iron pot in which the stew is cooked.  More on that another time…

January Photo a Day 2013: Shadow

Still playing catch up! But I have not given up…

Day 18. Shadow: Find a shadow and shoot it. It could be your own, or a shadow of something else. Shadows look great with a black and white filter over the top {just sayin!}.

It has been overcast here for what seems like forever…Shadows have been hard to come by.  While stopping in for lunch at our favorite Mongolian restaurant this past weekend I was able to capture a shadowy shot.  Image

January Photo a Day 2013: Yellow

Day 14. Something yellow: Find something yellow in your travels today and take a photo.

My life is filled with yellow…and it’s not even close to being my favorite color.  Here are a few pics I snapped before leaving my office today.

DSC00398

This is the yellow hard- hat I was required to wear, back in 2006, while walking around during the construction of our new campus.

DSC00399

This is the apron that our volunteers wear while serving in the cafe on the weekends. I love the yellow embroidered coffee cup!

DSC00403

These are our 2013 Volunteer T-Shirts.  We are a casual church, this is as close as we get to wearing a tie in our church.  The yellow volunteer sign in the window faces out onto the exit driveway…It is a reminder to all who see it to VOLUNTEER!

DSC00405

This is my favorite travel mug…It’s a Tervis and it’s made in America…The yellow-gold symbol is representative of my favorite football team the New Orleans Saints and my hometown…NOLA!

January Photo A Day 2013: Surprise

Day 12. Surprise: I love when I stumble across coins when I’m walking. It’s a lovely surprise. That would be a lucky photo for me. Can you think of a way to capture surprise?

Surprise!!!  There’s a baby in my cake!!!

DSC00390

In the southern United States, the tradition was brought to the area by colonists from France and Spain and is associated with Carnival (also known as Mardi Gras). Celebrated across the Gulf Coast region from the Florida Panhandle to East Texas, it originated in French Louisiana and King cake parties in New Orleans are documented back to the eighteenth century.

DSC00394

The king cake of the New Orleans tradition comes in a number of styles. The most simple and the most traditional, is a ring of twisted bread similar to that used in brioche topped with icing or sugar, usually colored purple, green, and gold (the traditional Mardi Gras colors) with food coloring. In 1972, a small bakery in Picayune, Mississippi, Paul’s Pastry, started adding fillings

DSC00396 Also, some bakers have now taken the liberty to offer king cakes for other holidays that immediately surround Mardi Gras season, such as green and red-icing king cakes for Christmas, red and pink-icing cakes for Valentine’s Day, and green and white-icing cakes for St. Patrick’s Day. Others have gone a step further and produce specialty king cakes from the beginning of football season for Louisiana State University and New Orleans Saints tailgate parties, then for Halloween, then Thanksgiving – and do not cease until after Mardi Gras season with an Easter holiday king cake.  It has become customary in the Southern culture that whoever finds the trinket must provide the next king cake or host the next Mardi Gras party.

Surprise...a history lesson wrapped in a pastry!  Some information gathered from Wikepedia and of course personal first hand knowledge.

What do the prompts mean?

There are no rules when playing along with photo a day, you can be creative as you like! Interpret the prompt as you please. For those that need a little help, some more suggested details about each prompt are below.

13. Circle: Look as you go about today for things shaped in circles. Is it the tyres on a bus? A big sign? Or something else?
14. Something yellow: Find something yellow in your travels today and take a photo.
